Slasher is a term which is commonly used to depict horror movies. So what’s the word doing in an article about job security?
The author, Marci Alboher coined this word in the year 2007, which, in the financial sense, meant one person with multiple jobs. It basically gives the meaning of someone who has slashes “/ ” in their job description. Now that the theory part has been explained, let us get to the point of the article.
A large majority of the population are slashers. Now the reasons may be different; some of them might enjoy the fast-paced lifestyle or on the other hand, they may want to work in one job, but the pay isn’t enough, so hence they’re slashers.
So why do people work multiple jobs? The reasons are straight-forward; saving money for retirement, financially help out their family, save for the education of their children or leave a sizable inheritance to their children.
Unless you are your own employer
To be honest, there is no such thing as a safe and secure job. Because unless you are your own employer, anyone at the higher rungs of the business ladder has the authority to fire you.
So after you get your degree, you have got two options.
- You can get a meager paying job, a regular 9-5, and this gives you a semblance of security.
- You can go out and learn as you earn, gaining experience and making your own way to the top. This pays you substantially more but takes much longer to achieve.
The main reason that people want job security is that they are taught that at a young age, starting from school and as an adult, so many of the adults still follow that advice. Because it has been ingrained, job security is much more important than financial security or even financial freedom for that matter. In the sad reality, there are people that need to balance multiple jobs to make ends meet. This article isn’t about those people. It targets those individuals that do not need to work so many jobs but yet continue to do so anyway. These people might have the fear that in case they get fired from one job, they always have the other to fall back on or it’s a fear that something bad can happen financially.
Many people are on a quest to search for freedom and happiness. But what about financial freedom?
Rather than working two side jobs, work at your regular day job and start a feasible business on the side. This may seem risky, but if you follow the rules and keep up with the regulations, it is a much safer and more secure option than your day job.
Keep your search towards financial freedom always on your mind. Focus your education towards this subject and the more you learn about it, the more confident you are. You have the power to take control of your financial destiny.
